Remaining Relevant in the Workplace
“Remaining Relevant in the Workplace”, a full-day CT Chapter program was held June 5, 2007 at Zabarra’s Banquet House in New Britain, CT. We began the day with a welcome from New Britain’s Mayor Timothy Stewart.
Counseling Supervisor Jerry Wagner of the Department of Corrections presented a full morning session entitled “What Happens to the Dinosaurs”. This engaging presentation reminded us that only 20% of workplace learning takes place through formal training; 80% occurs through experience, feedback, observation, and other informal or incidental means. Group exercises helped us see that it is this informal and incidental learning that transmits the organization’s culture and practices. With proactive organizational influence, informal learning can be relevant, up-to-date and appropriate so that we are not “creating dinosaurs”.
Mid-day, we enjoyed a very nice Zabarra’s hot buffet lunch, sponsored by Graystone Group Recrutiment Advertising.
Our afternoon speaker, Saranne Murray of Shipman & Goodwin, presented a legal update on ADA issues. Saranne shared her expertise on the differences between Connecticut and federal law, CHRO interpretations, EEOC Guidelines, Fitness for duty medical examinations, and recent court case rulings.
We wrapped up the day with presentation of scholarships and recognition of the many members who volunteered their time throughout the year as well as the members of the Chapter's Executive Board.
