On April 28, 2005, 83 Connecticut Chapter IPMA members gathered at Sbarra's restaurant at the Stanley Golf Course, in New Britain, for a wonderful one-day event. The plenary session was led off by Mayor, Eddie A. Perez, who gave a presentation on the City of Hartford's quality improvements in the areas of leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, human resources focus, process management and performance measures. After his presentation it was clear to see why Hartford is once again returning to greatness and is becoming an examples for cities across the nation. The opening speaker was to be Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal. Because of a slight change in his schedule, he spoke after Mayor Perez. Attorney General Blumenthal gave a well-received talk on current Connecticut reforms. He then answered questions on such current hot topics as "no child left behind". After he made time to speak with many of the members. After a break, the concurrent morning sessions were by Jim DeMaio, Vice-President of Learning Dynamics, who did a presentation on "Bringing Out the Best in Others", and Richard "Dick" Heil, founder and President of The Curtis Group, who did a presentation on "Managing HR ... And Conflict". The afternoon concurrent sessions included a presentation by Chris Galligan, Acting Dean and MBA Director of the School of Business at CCSU, on "Organizational Values and the Contemporary Organization", and Kristin Galligan, Adjunct Lecturer at Middlesex Community College on "Maintaining Team Motivation in a Changing Environment". The afternoon Plenary session was by Michael Rion, Ph.D, principal and founder of Resources for Ethics and Management. Dr. Rion led a thought provoking discussion on ethics in the workplace which included several "what if?" examples that illustrated how ethics can be a very tricky subject. The conference finished with a drawing for door prizes and a social hour. Everyone who attended was of the opinion that this was one of the best one-day conferences that has been conducted by IPMA. |
